Off to College? What To Do with Your Student’s Room

Students

With your student all moved out of the house to attend college, one of the big questions many parents have is, “What do we do with the extra room?” Some leave the room as is for when their child returns, while others turn it into a guest room. We thought we would give you some more ideas on what to do with the extra space.

Bedroom - Game Room

  • Office: Create an office space that is both cozy and functional. Add a couch and bookshelf in the room to make it feel more like a comfortable, quiet place that you can relax in as well.
  • Game Room: Create a space that you can entertain guests in. A pool table, a built-in bar, and some TVs will make your room a neighborhood favorite.
  • Media Room: Are you a movie fanatic? Turn the bedroom into a personal movie theater with comfy chairs, a projector screen, and a popcorn machine.
  • Music Room: For the musicians out there, move your piano and musical instruments into the spare room to create a music room. Make the room soundproofed by adding vinyl-covered walls.
  • Guest Room: This might be the most common answer. Turn the room into a guest room. To make it unique, equip the room with towels and all of the necessary toiletries.

And if you need a place to store your student’s belongings while they’re away, we’re here to help!

Student Checklist for Moving Out of Your Summer Storage Unit

Students Moving and Holding Boxes

College_StudentsWith summer getting closer to being over and school starting next month, we thought we would give students some helpful tips on moving out. These are some important things to think about when moving out and into your new place.

  • Make sure to give a 10 day notice. Contact the office to give your vacate date. This will ensure that you are eligible to have your last month pro rated (if you move out mid month for example).
  • Don’t over pay because there are no refunds. Your rent is paid in advanced, so as mentioned in tip #1, by communicating with the office you can save money by having your rent prorated to your move out date.
  • When moving out and into your new place, make sure to keep your boxes after unpacking. They are easy to store and will save you money for next year when you need to move out again for the summer.
  • Keep your lock! This will also save you the money of having to buy a lock when you are ready to store your belongings next summer.
  • Rent a truck or find a friend that has a truck in advance. That way you won’t be scrambling to find a way to move your belongings out of storage on the last day.

The more efficient you are with your packing and organizing, the smaller the storage unit you will need. Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your space and save money by renting a smaller storage unit.

  • When storing small or awkward sized items, you can use a shelving unit to help maximize space. If you want to save even more money, you could attempt to build your own.
  • Fill any empty spaces and hollow objects, such as dresser drawers. You will be amazed to see how much more space this will save you.
  • Vacuum seal clothing, bedding, or clothes before putting into storage.
  • Disassemble beds and tables to more efficiently store your belongings.
  • Storing a sofa upright will save a lot of space, but you want to make sure that it is secure and won’t fall over and damage anything.
  • By putting heavier boxes on the bottom you will be able to stack boxes higher without them falling.

One thing to remember when packing your storage unit is to make sure to leave an isle down the middle so you can easily access anything that you may need.
